Republican earmark ban defector unpunished

Despite defying the House Republican ban on earmarks, Rep. Joseph Cao of Louisiana can still expect strong support from the National Republican Congressional Committee.  NRCC chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) told The Hill last week that “Joseph Cao is a member of our party and I would expect and anticipate that we will be there to help Joseph Cao.”

Cao is among four House Republicans to submit earmark requests despite the one year ban announced in March by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).  The other House Republicans bucking the decision are Ron Paul (TX), Don Young (AK) and Henry Brown Jr. (SC).  Brown is retiring and Paul is expected to win reelection easily.  Young is being targeted by Democrats, and Sessions suggested that his stance on earmarks would not have an impact on the NRCC’s support.
